Wrap It Right!

Reduce Your Paper Use This Holiday Season

from the pages of Natural Home MagazineShortly after Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, consumers add an extra 5 million tons of trash and 38,000 miles of ribbon to landfills every year. The amount of ribbon alone could tie a big bow around the earth.

The amount of waste can be prevented this holiday season with a few helpful pointers from Natural Home magazine. With a little planning and environmentally conscious creativity, you can turn old wrapping paper, ribbons, bows, decorative scrap paper and fun knickknacks into beautiful gift wrap.

It is not difficult to find the most unique gift wrap—just search around your home. Let your imagination loose and search for materials like magazines, maps, cards, posters, newspapers, comic books, old books, tissue paper and anything else that strikes your fancy.

Instead of throwing out wrapping paper and gift bags because they have seen better days, strategically place a decorative object, such as a bow or card, over the ripped portion.

If you’re going to buy new gift wrap, make sure it is recycled paper. Gift wrapping ideas do not end with wrapping paper and the perfect bow; try cloth gift wrap, newspaper and old shopping bags.

Who said that the gift had to be inside the wrapping? Another alternative is using a shirt, scarf or skirt as the wrapping paper.
