It’s about time someone else recognized how amazing Triexta really is. The Federal Trading Commission is in total agreement with our retailers, consumers, and everybody here at Mohawk- SmartStrand Triexta is in a class by itself.
In early 2006, Mohawk Industries and DuPont filed a joint petition for the FTC to establish a new generic fiber subclass name under the “polyester” classification for the PTT (Polytrimethylene Terephthalate) category.
You guessed it. That PTT fiber is Triexta, the fiber that comprises our SmartStrand and SmartStrand with DuPont Sorona renewably sourced polymer carpets.
In order to be recognized by the FTC as a unique sub-class, Triexta had to demonstrate:
• Distinctive properties of importance to the general public as a result of a new method of manufacture or substantially differentiated physical characteristics, such as fiber structure.
• The distinctive feature(s) make the fiber suitable for uses for which other fibers under the established generic name would not be suited, or would be significantly less well suited.
Thus, in addition to having a completely new fiber structure, Triexta had to show superior ability to all other polyester fibers.
FTC Delivers a Landmark Ruling on Triexta
On Friday, March 20th 2009 the FTC approved “Triexta” as the new generic sub class for PTT, essentially making it the new standard in carpet fiber.
This historic ruling is not only the first extension the FTC has approved for textiles in 5 years, but the first extension for residential carpeting since nylon in 1959.

Since the introduction of SmartStrand in 2004, we’ve never hesitated to sing the praises of our amazing carpet over PET polyester. It’s wonderful to finally have the FTC sing along with us.
SmartStrand is revolutionary, innovative, distinctive, and now it’s official. It’s Triexta and it’s just better.
