Wood Buyer's Checklist

A Step-By-Step Walkthrough

A Major Decision

One of the most popular flooring types today, wood is a beautiful option. If chosen and cared for properly, wood floors can last for decades. However, it’s important to know which wood products are suited for various environments—even within the same house.

This step-by-step guide will walk you through the important considerations that will ultimately help you to choose, buy and install the right wood flooring for any room in your house.

Choosing The Right Hardwood

When choosing flooring, discuss the following considerations with your retailer:

  • Consider who spends time in your home, and don’t forget to include visitors and pets. Hardwood can last for decades, so consider future children or pets as well.
  • Taking into account your household and the daily use of your floors, rank the importance of hardwood’s wear resistance, longevity, and stain resistance.
  • Consider your environment. Does your hardwood need protection from humidity, moisture, sun exposure or other elements?

Wood Design & Construction

  • Determine whether a solid hardwood, engineered hardwood, or RevWood product will perform best in your home.
  • Identify your decorating style and gather samples of existing paint, fabrics and adjacent flooring.
  • Consider finishing touches like trims, underlayment and additional accessories.
  • Familiarize yourself with the various species of hardwood.
  • Determine your preference for hardwood aesthetics.
  • Consider additional design elements such as patterns, borders and medallions.
  • Familiarize yourself with the different finishing options and choose the best fit for your taste and lifestyle.

How to Measure and Purchase Wood Flooring

  • Measure your space to estimate your square footage. Multiply length times width of each room to equal square footage. To account for waste, add 10% to the total (multiply by 1.10) for a good working estimate.
  • Figure in wood flooring price, trims and accessories, installation and additional fees to create a realistic budget and to accurately compare products.
  • Consider the type of shopping experience you want and then look for a retailer near you. Many stores sell flooring, but independent retailers are flooring experts with an emphasis on customer service.
  • Before you purchase, read all warranty information carefully to fully understand any requirements.

Wood Installation and Maintenance Tips

  • Talk to your retailer about choosing a professional installer. Proper installation is critical to the success of your wood flooring.
  • Prepare your home for installation. Move everything out of the room(s) and clear a generous path to the room(s), removing all breakables. Ensure subfloors are clean and free of debris.
  • Wood flooring should be delivered two days ahead of installation to the room(s) where it will be installed for proper acclimation.
  • Read the manufacturer’s literature to learn about proper care and maintenance for your new wood flooring. Most dissatisfaction with hardwood flooring results from improper cleaning practices. Improper cleaning may also void the warranty.
